Application overload: When is being connected too much?

I now count almost 30 social media websites I am connected to and check and/or ad to more or less on a daily basis. Granted, that’s a lot of people to reach out to for networking, but it begs the question, is that too much connection?
I’m sure there are others out there who are even more connected..but at what point are we watering down our conversations?
It’s not the same as a thoughtful conversation over tea and cookies cuddled up cozy in front of a fire with one’s cat. Oh, right, didn’t I blog about wanting a virtual fireplace?!
Words on a screen, whether it be a laptop, tablet, or phone, are, at the end of the day words.
Photos capture the best moments, and yes, video can be live streaming…sigh, sigh, sigh. I’m just not satisfied with living in a virtual world.
I’m working on the Reiki application, however. When you click on it, nothing happens.
Well, that’s not entirely true…it’s either a message, voice or text that basically conveys the idea: “Honor the Pause” or, more accurately, “Honor this Moment”. Don’t fill it up with anything.
Amazing concept, no?
I was in the sauna at my gym today (when will this chilly Seattle weather cease!!). The other gal who was in there with me had her headphones on and was busy texting. Beep, beep, with the occasional sound of the beat of whatever music she was tuned into.
I’m in the sauna, taking in that heat, letting it seep into my bones and my mind. She’s there bringing the whole world in with her. I know people have different needs, but a sauna?
Hey, I’m guilty of answering my phone in the bathroom stall, and finishing what I was doing in there while on a call. I’m not proud, but it happens sometimes. I’ve learned to just let the call go, I’ll get it in a few minutes.
Some places should be declared anti-application sanctuaries. I think I’m going to have to take this mug’s slogan and make it into a t-shirt..what do you think?
